¡HICA! Expresses Concern about Executive Actions

(Birmingham, AL) January 25, 2017- Today, President Trump signed two executive orders aimed at curbing immigration. The orders call for constructing a wall on the Mexican border, ramping up deportations, and cracking down cities that refuse to convert their local law enforcement officers into immigration agents.

“Building a wall is not the way to fix the broken immigration system. The system needs a total overhaul reform” said Isabel Rubio, ¡HICA!’s Executive Director. “Similarly, turning local law enforcement officers into immigrants agents undermines community trust and allows crime to flourish”, Rubio concluded.

In response, ¡HICA! in unity with allies in the civil rights community, will do everything in its power to protect Latinos and other vulnerable Americans from unwise and divisive policies. Now, more than ever, the community needs to organize at the grassroots level to work with city and state officials to build alliances between communities, and increase civic engagement work.
