Alabama Coalition for Immigrant Justice Heads to D.C. to Rally for Immigration Reform
Twelve members of the Alabama Coalition for Immigrant Justice (ACIJ), a network of individuals and organizations which seeks to provide a united voice dedicated to ensuring the social, legal and civic rights of all immigrants in Alabama, will travel to Washington, D.C. to participate in the March for America on Sunday, March 21st, 2:00 PM (EST) on the National Mall.
ACIJ members traveling to the march will include representatives from the Hispanic Interest Coalition of Alabama (¡HICA!) and Alabama Appleseed Center for Law & Justice, Inc. as well as individual members
representing the immigrant community and its supporters in Albertville, Birmingham and Montgomery. Reform Immigration for America, the coalition of individuals and grassroots networks spearheading the event, expects thousands from across the country for the march demanding immigration reform and economic justice for all Americans. Sponsors of the March for America include the National Council of La Raza, the Asian American Justice Center, Catholic Legal Immigration Network, Inc., and the American Jewish Committee as well as a number of local, grassroots organizations.
Zayne Smith, ACIJ Coordinator and Immigration Policy Fellow at Alabama Appleseed said, “This march represents the need for change. We are asking Congress and the Obama administration to fix the broken
immigration system through Immigration Reform. Let’s end the divisive and political games at the state level and push Congress to make a change.”
Aylene Sepulveda, a community organizer in Albertville, said, “I’m going to march for families whose voices are not heard. It’s important for Alabama’s voice to be heard so that our legislators know that the immigrant community and its supporters are not going to be silent.”
