“Engaging Hispanic Families in Education” Workshop
On Saturday, November 14th HICA’s Community Outreach Coordinator Caitlin Sandley, AmeriCorps Vista Vanessa Stevens, and a community member conducted a workshop titled “Engaging Hispanic Families in Education” in collaboration with the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute.  A total of 18 educators from Jefferson and Shelby counties participated in the three-hour workshop where they learned more about Latino culture, Alabama’s Hispanic population, issues confronting immigrants and youth, and obstacles to families’ involvement in schools.  The workshop also included sessions allowing the teachers to share community and school resources and brainstorm immediate and future actions for engaging Hispanic families. HICA staff further gathered resources for teachers and their students about higher education and scholarship opportunities, particularly for undocumented youth.
