Stories of Economic Integration

The Cruz Family

Anselma has been a client of ¡HICA! since 2008. Originally from Mexico, she and her family have lived in the United States since 2000. She first came to ¡HICA! for help in applying for health insurance and filling out passport applications for her children, who are U.S. citizens. Anselma also received information and referral services relating to several issues and questions that she had about living in Birmingham.

In recent years, ¡HICA! has seen Anselma and her family make great strides along the journey to self-sufficiency through entrepreneurship. She and her family became one of the first constituents to open a business through ¡HICA!'s Asset Building and Economic Development Program. The program helped the Cruz family with technical assistance in opening a business and obtaining licenses, as well as with sales tax and other necessary credentials. They have filed their 2010, 2011 and 2012 federal and state tax returns through ¡HICA!. Anselma is also a proud member of our Comadres Women's Empowerment Initiative. In her spare time, she loves to cook and knit. Her favorite thing to cook is Encacaguatado, a delicious dish with mole and peanuts.
